- As a Beatles fan, I became quite exited about the release of this new
- album, 'he Beatles Live at the BBC'. So, on the day of its release I was
- in and out of the shop and back home playing the thing by 09:45 a.m.
-
- The album itself, is as the title suggests, a collection of live
- recordingsmade by the band, between March 1962 & June 1965. Given the fact
- that these are live sessions, you are left in no doubt that The Beatles
- themselves were reared on Rock 'n' Roll and could knock out any tune that
- was requested of them! This is reflected in the 56 tracks on the album
- (yes fifty-six), of which only 13 of them have been written by Lennon and
- McCartney! The remaining 43 songs are cover versions, and these range from
- raunchy rockers by Carl Perkins & Chuck Berry, to a strange and lovely
- sounding ballad entitled 'The Honeymoon Song' which was originally
- written by a greek composer called Theodorkis, and recorded and
- released in June 1959 by the one and only Marino Marini & his Quartet.
-
- Of all the 43 covers on the album 31 of them have not appeared on any of
- The Beatles' previous albums! Highlights of these, for me, are Chuck
- Berry's 'Sweet
- Little Sixteen', Buddy Holly's 'Crying Waiting Hoping', a shot of
- Rhythm & Blues, (the B side* of 'You'd Better Move On' by Arthur
- Alexandra) and a thumping good version of 'I Got a Woman' written by
- Ray Charles, although I must confess I've only ever heard a recorded
- version by Elvis Presley.
-
- The CD also contains tracks illustrating that The Beatles could sing
- great harmony vocals, none more so than 'To Know Her Is To Love Her'
- a number 1 for the American band - The Teddy Bears.
-
- Of the 13 Lennon and McCartney songs, there is one which has
- previously been unreleased, its title ' I'll Be On My Way'. This is a
- typical 'Beatle' pop song in which John & Paul share a lead vocal, a
- song which I feel that if a single is to be released from the album
- then this would be a strong candidate! The remaining 12 Lennon and
- McCartney songs are a mixture of songs from their first 5 albums, upto
- and including, 'For Sale'.
-
- The double CD album is held together with bits of dialogue consisting of
- either The Beatles cracking jokes or exchanging banter with the various
- B.B.C. radio presenters of that era, these include Alan 'Fluff' Freeman and
- Brian Matthews.
-
- All in all I found this new album very entertaining, not least for the
- fact that The Beatles sound like they were performing because they
- wanted to, and they also sound like they were enjoying it! Something
- that I feel lacking in later years of the Beatles career, (remember
- Magical Mystery Tour?) On the downside, the complete album is a collection
- of mono recordings and the quality is lacking in clarity & consistence
- in the recordings (perhaps that was acceptable in the early sixties
- as mono recording was the convension back then?) Indeed, there is an
- awful bit in 'A Hard Days Night' in which a piano solo is dubbed from a
- separate tape machine containing "hisses and all", but when a genuine
- piece of history is unearthed its never perfect is it!
-
- This is not the first time that a tape recording of The Beatles'early work
- has appeared! In 1974 or thereabouts, bootleg tapes of The Beatles
- performing in the 'Kieser Keller' in Hamburg Germany, came to light,
- and it would seem someone (with good hindsight) had walked into the
- club and with the aid of a tape recorder captured that live
- performance, kept it for fifteen years and then sold it to the
- highest bidder! As far as I can recall the album that had been
- entitled 'The Beatles The Early Years' did not do too well in the
- record sales department! Lets hope for the sake of the B.B.C and E.M.I,
- that 'The Beatles Live At The BBC' performs a little better than the
- afore mentioned! If not, we could see yet another rise in the price of a
- T.V. Licence?
-
- I must confess, I can't see many of the younger readers spending รบ18.99
- for this double CD, but feel confident that it will be more than be
- accomodated in CD collections of dedicated Beatle fans! 'The Beatles Live
- at the B.B.C.' is a "MUST" for good old Rock 'n' Rollers but A "NON
- RUNNER" for Techno/Dance types!!

-
- [Ed] - Watch out for the new, soon to be released Beatles single, a
- track apparently re-mastered in the studio with the Fab`s featuring the
- vocals of John Lennon - spooky!!
